Bilbo's Last SongBilbo's Last Song by J.R.R. Tolkien
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A new to me JRR Tolkien work, exquisitely illustrated by Pauline Baynes, this was marvelous. While initially a quick read, the illustrations and endnotes make for lingering meditation. Bilbo's song invites reflection.

Now that I am aware of its existence, this book is a must have for my library.

I've decided on my yarn...

...for the Desolation of Smaug Shawl Mystery Knit-a-Long

beginning on July 1, 2013.  My choice is Madelinetosh 's Tosh Merino DK in Tart.  It's an absolutely lovely yarn with incredible depth.  It's red rings true to me of Smaug.

Chicken Soup with Rice

Chicken Soup with Rice: A Book of MonthsChicken Soup with Rice: A Book of Months by Maurice Sendak

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a marvelous book by Maurice Sendak. Rhyming poems for each month, it sings the praises of chicken soup with rice. My three daughters loved having this read to them ad infinitum. Fun!

Sharp Objects

Sharp ObjectsSharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Having read Gillian Flynn's _Gone Girl_, I eagerly anticipated the opportunity to binge on _Sharp Objects_, her debut novel. Binge I did. If I could have read it in one sitting, I would have, but I ran out of hours in the day.

Mysterious, foreboding, tightly written--_Sharp Objects_ will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final page. Now, to read _Dark Places_!

Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls

Let's Explore Diabeties with OwlsLet's Explore Diabeties with Owls by David Sedaris

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

FINALLY! Am downloading the audiobook from Audible as I type. Guess what I'm doing today?

ETA
Thoroughly enjoyed the book, most especially the majority of personal stories that sedaris shares and reads. David Sedaris reading his works aloud is quite the best way of partaking of them. Highly recommend. FYI, R rated.

Moving along

Shawls are one of my favorite things. One of the projects currently on my needles is Carson by Romi Hill. Romi is an inspiration to me as a designer.

It took me a long time to find just the right yarn for this wrap. I was surprised to find half of it in my stash==> Loops&Threads Luxury Sock super fine in Ocean as the main colour. i picked up Tourmaline in SweetGeorgiaYarns super sock from Jimmy Beans.

Very pleased with the results thus far.

More on Desolation of Smaug Mystery Knit-a-long

This shawl is exciting to ponder!  The first clue release date will be July 1, 2013.  I am very pleased with how it is shaping up so far.  I believe I've settled on my final yarn selection. Will let everyone know later this week.

This pattern is available on Ravelry.

Ravelry: SereKnittyKnitter's Laura's Vernal Equinox

Happy to say that I've finished a sweater for myself.  It is a heavily modified version of the Equinox Raglan from The Best of Knitscene.

This link will take you to my project on Ravelry...

Ravelry: SereKnittyKnitter's Laura's Vernal Equinox

Here are some pictures to enjoy Right Now!  I was very happy to wear it today.  Yay!

I used Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock in Ribbon Candy, rather than a worsted weight as recommended for this sweater.  And, I added a modified feather and fan edging to the sleeves and bottom which I found in a Barbara Walker treasury.  Pleased with results.

Desolation of Smaug Shawl Mystery Knit-A-Long

My husband and I are great Tolkien fans.  It is one of our commonalities and loves which first attracted us to one another.  Our wedding was Lord of the Rings themed.  I baked lembas bread as favors.

Thus, a Tolkien themed knit has been in my thoughts for years.

Today, I've announced on Ravelry my first Mystery Knit-a-long, which will begin on July 1st, 2013, and continue for 6-8 weeks with a new clue released each week.  The shawl is titled The Desolation of Smaug in anticipation of the upcoming The Hobbit:  The Desolation of Smaug in December.

And so...

...it begins.

I'm a 50+1 year old woman, finally finding serenity in my life.  Knitting is an integral part of this.

I love to knit, and often will be moving yarn about with pointy sticks for eight hours at a time.

I'm exploring the creative outlet of knitwear design, too.  I had my first pattern, Chandra Shawl,  published in the Winter 2012 issue of Interweave's Knitscene magazine.  I'm working on some new ideas right now and waiting to hear back on a recent submission.

You can find me on Ravelry as SereKnittyKnitter and SereKnittyKnitr on Pinterest.  And, my plan is to grow my Etsy shop, SereKnittyNowKnits.

Knit on!
